Data warehousing

Data warehouses are IT systems which are characterized by a particular manner of recording and presenting data. What’s particular is that data collected within a database is recorded in the form in which it appears in reports. It involves deriving data from its source system form, whereby single business events (e.g. single order) are the most important, as well as converting it to the processed form, whereby the main item is (e.g. the sales record of a product). The difference seems slight, however, from the point of view of users who analyze data, and in terms of access to data, it is a revolutionary change.

Owing to the use of data warehouse, one can reverse the proportion of corporate time spent on preparing reports and analyzing data included in them. This ratio amounts to 80/20 in traditionally run organizations. However, data warehouses enable us to spend 80% of reporting time on analyzing data.

The essence of data warehouse use is reversing this traditional model – instead of collecting reports, one gathers highly detailed data. On the basis of such data, it is possible to draw up the same reports as those delivered by employees on location, and much more:

  • simplified access to data for corporate executives and analysts (results in more detailed an analysis)
  • uniform reporting procedures (thus, one can compare data included in reports drawn up by different authors)
  • the duties of employees responsible for results and those in charge of preparing reports are separated (it renders embellishing statistics more difficult)
  • the quality of data within reports is improved (the automatic way of preparing reports gives their quality a considerable boost)
  • the time between occurrences of events and their representation in corporate data is shortened (no need for waiting with transferring statistics until the closing of settlement period)
  • time spent on preparing reports undergoes a considerable reduction (employees on location can concentrate on their basic tasks, whereas the paperwork gets automatically done in the head office)
